Question posted in the General Law category relating to Gauteng
Good day sir/madam
I registered at Tshwane University of Technology in 2022, but my application was not considered on time. In mid February 2023 after many attempts to go to the institution, I was "squeezed" in by the lecturers to come and study. To make a long story short, my employer sent me to work far and I was not going to able to study anymore, so I had to cancel the course.
When I cancelled the course on the 27th of February, I only found out then that I must pay the penalty fee of 60%, and the clause is in the Student Prospectus that I have never seen due to the late registration. I really believe it's not fair for me to pay the money TUT says I owe, considering that I don't remember signing anything that has the cancellation and penalty fee clause as I registered late around the 15th of February 2024.
I was only shown the prospectus when I cancelled, but I believe there should have been a document that student must sign with regards to the cancellation and penalty fee when registering. I never signed anything that binds me to pay the penalty fee, but I was only told that I would forfeit the R1500 registration fee, which I have forfeited.
My question is, what are the chances of me being blacklisted if I don't pay this money that I strongly believe I should not be paying? The institution is threatening to blacklist me.
