Question posted in the Criminal Law category relating to Western Cape
I am a first year university student who is performing very well in my degree and i am funded by nsfas. In early october i shoplifted a skincare serum worth R730 from dischem and i was arrested and appeared in court on the 8th of October. I pleaded not guilty, because i was told that there might be a chance of being entered into a diversion program. I made friends with the wrong group of people and i succumbed to the peer pressure that making bad decisions like stealing was ok because i couldn't afford what certain things. This isn't who am I or who i want to be, and i come from a very supportive upbringing. i just want a second chance to prove that this isn't who i am. Because of the amount of student debt i have i became and still am really depressed, anxious and fearful that i won't be able to afford what i need to get by an still have a place in university next year. so i had moment of weakness that lead to me shoplifting from dischem. i just want to know what is the likelihood of me being placed into the diversion program and not getting a criminal record?
