Question posted in the Consumer Protection Law category relating to North West
Hi there. On 17/7/2018 at circa 22.00 I called hotlips sexchat line. I did not realise that I had in fact was opening an account at the time. It wasn't clear to me. They asked my DoB and name - as I didn't understand I was obliged to provide real details, I gave incorrect details. The lady spoke super quickly about the deal and asked if I wanted to continue - I said to her "how does the payment work?", she replied "do you want to have sexchat?" I said yes and she continued. I assumed at that point that the cost of the call was how they get paid. As I was calling from a pre-paid cell, I knew that if it cut off I had run out of money.
I didn't receive any follow up information, sms or anything. Today, (7/8/2018) I get a message from someone saying that there is a legal process because I have failed to pay my account and they are investigating. Also looking into fraud if I provided incorrect details. There is a recording also, which will verify everything I have said.
I called the number and the guy was very unpleasant and when I asked questions he was saying "so you are refusing to pay the account and want to proceed to a legal process?". I said no, I am not refusing but I have questions... I asked for him to send me the details on an email but so far I have not seen anything. He says I owe R2000. The conversation ended when I called him immoral - he said "I will show you immoral - I will prosecute you".
I feel tricked by this. It is definitely some type of scam. If there is no way out I am okay to pay the money but want to know my position first.
I feel tricked here. What advice do you have?Tim
