We moved into a place on the 1st of June...

Question posted in the Landlord Tenant Law category relating to Western Cape

We moved into a place on the 1st of June. There were quite a number of things that needed to be fixed and re-done and I was assured that this will be done ASAP as our rent has been increased a lot (compared to what the previous tenant and the surrounding houses in the same complex was/are paying). The month is almost over and nothing has been done yet. I don’t know if we should just fix these things ourselves (on our own expense) - I do feel however that we are renting and this is not really our responsibility. The stove and oven does not work, the showers’ hot-water element does not work + the doors are falling out...and various more similar types of problems. I understand that the painting jobs can take longer as it is winter but what to do about the rest of the things? Every time I follow up I just get told that they are busy and we must wait. Does anyone have any advice as to what a person can do in this situation?
