Question posted in the Landlord Tenant Law category relating to Gauteng
I rented a space for my business. The lease agreement was from 1 October 2023 for a year. The lease agreement came to an end and I subsequently was offered another job elsewhere at the end of October. I paid rent on 1 October 2024 but rarely used the space as I travelled in October and started my new job. I informed the landlord that since my contract had ended I was not coming back.
Was I supposed to give notice even though the contract term had ended? The landlord also had forgotten and didn't follow up with me on signing a new agreement or how we were going to engage going forward.
The contract states a 2 month notice period for termination of the agreement but since the contract term came to an end does this 2 month notice period still apply? What are my rights here? Can she keep my deposit because I just left at the end of the contract period?
