Hi there, I’d like your help with a minor legal issue. I had a bursary for 5 years. The terms of agreement were, upon completion of my studies I’d have to work for the company for the same number of years I was sponsored. The contract goes on to say failure to honor the agreement, the bursary amount will be due payable with interest. In the event the company cannot find me employment, I’ll be free to go elsewhere and the debt is cleared. However no specific date is specified for this purpose. My proof of qualification is dated 24 December 2019, to date the company has not offered me employment. My question is, legally how long can they keep me waiting. Is there a maximum duration they’re obligated to find me a job in or let me go. When can I be free to seek employment elsewhere with the debt being cleared?

If there is no date, I think that you would then default to "a reasonable period of time".

That might be, in the circumstances, 2 to 6 months... but you need to get the ball rolling. 

Best bet is to write them a letter, and post it to them, and hand deliver, and say "I've graduated, Please give me a job; otherwise I must find another job"
