I had R70 000 stolen from me from a guest house where my boyfriend and I are staying. The safe in our room was not working so we were told to keep the money in our friends room in his safe. We had the key and the duplicate key was kept by the caretaker of the lodge. On Tuesday morning all the money was accounted for and we locked up the safe. On Friday afternoon we opened the safe and all our money had been stolen. The safe was not tampered with and neither was the door to the room. The money was stolen between Tuesday and Friday while we were out as well as our friend.
The keys to the rooms as well as the keys to the safe ate kept in the office. When we reported this incident to the caretaker the keys were lying out on the floor, the duplicate safe key is also missing.
I have opened a case with SAPS but they say it is hear say. I would like to know if it is possible to hold the owner of the lodge liable as the keys were left out negligently and the rooms not secure. We also never signed anything to state that if valuables or anything of the sort go missing that he is not accountable.
We do also have multiple witnesses that saw us put the money in the safe.
