Question posted in the Criminal Law category relating to Eastern Cape

My brother was arrested with a possession of a fire arm 2019 December if I'm not mistaken, this fire arm belongs to our grand father, is still alive and the fire arm is has a licence. On the 04 March 2021 he was found guilt in possession of a fire arm that does not belong to him and sentenced to five years imprisonment in Mthatha regional court. I would like to know if we can do an appeal against the final verdict or we need a lawyer to do so? Thank you.
