Question posted in the Criminal Law category relating to Gauteng

A family member was involved in a hit and run, where she was hit from behind while walking at the pavement and the drive did not stop, she did not suffer major injuries according to the doc apart from a broken cola bone which meant that she does not qualify for RAF ,a police case was opened against the driver as by standers was able to obtain the licenses plate of the car. Investigator who reluctant to investigate made suggestion that we engage without the driver to resolve the issue, after numerous refusal to meet the party and they officer stated that they will processed with the case. After a month later when we inquire with the officer, they state that the driver was arrested and pleaded guilty, and was fined R 1000.00.
Please advise what are the penalties or fines for hit and run?
What other steps can be persude against the driver?
